Scott and Mary Spethman
In 2008, the Rebels Exemplary Service Award is presented to two individuals who have given a tremendous amount of time and energy to the Lincoln Rebels Baseball Program: Scott and Mary Spethman.
Looking back, the year 2002 was a critical point in the evolution of Rebels Baseball. For the previous eleven years, Dave and Kathy Bingham had led the Rebels as two of the four founders of the program, and they recognized that they could not continue to devote the same level of energy and number of hours to the organization. Dave decided he must find someone who had the talent, skill and commitment to provide the same high level of leadership to the organization that he and Kathy had for so many years. Scott Spethman was quickly identified as that individual, and he became president of the Rebels in 2002.
With proven abilities in business, and as a committed parent of Rebels players, Scott immediately brought a high level of organizational strength and passion to the Rebels.
“Up until the time when Scott took over as president,” said Dave, “I had always had a great personal desire for the organization to succeed. Fortunately, I found in Scott a guy who had that same passion. At a time when it was critical for the organization to have an injection of new energy and fresh ideas, Scott stepped up to provide solid insight and leadership. He had serious corporate leadership ideas about how the organization should be run, delegated and mentored. Among his most notable achievements was providing increased financial stability to the program.
“In supporting Scott in his leadership role,” said Dave, “Mary proved to be a tremendous partner. She is a tireless organizer, and was a relentless hard worker for the Rebels. She provided Scott with practical advice and a critical sounding board to help him lead the organization as president from 2002 through 2005. In addition, she took on many tasks, including the chairmanship of the apparel committee. She and Scott were both so important to the organization when they stepped in. They have unselfishly shared their talent with all of us, and we look forward to Scott’s continued leadership and guidance on the Rebels board as we look to the future.”
For their enthusiasm, and for their unselfish, dedicated service to the Lincoln Rebels, we honor Scott and Mary Spethman for all they have done for the Rebels organization, for us as individuals, and for the game of baseball in our city and in our region. Clearly, their work has elevated the Rebels Baseball Program, enhanced the ideals instituted by our founders, and helped to set the standard for select baseball organizations in Nebraska.
